This project sources Reddit posts and comments related to climate change’s effect on individual people and places globally. At first, the posts are labeled with locations and share specific stories about how shifting weather and biodiversity patterns are contributing to a lower quality of life for the users. Then, through a multitude of different experiences ranging from rising sea levels to higher temperatures to habitat destruction, a pattern of fear and anxiety over the state of our planet emerges. As you move through the posts they become more rooted in these anxieties and doubts, addressing the reactionary yet avoidant nature of the politics around climate change and the disregard for people directly impacted. Not only this, but the density of the posts and comments serve as a representation of the in-your-face, notification-driven form of news headlines that oversaturate our digital interactions. The project is meant to call attention to increasing levels of media consumption and the (non)influence that this has over our moral and social choices. The paradox of the wealthiest countries in the world burning millions of tons of fossil fuels a year while calling for more sustainable living has caused serious frustrations and worries for common people – who have much less control over our not-so-distant future.
Opaque, Horizontal, Independent, Project starts after they have participated already.
